The Nature Conservancy is a global conservation organization dedicated to preserve the plants, animals, and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive. TNC Indonesia Marine and Forest Program are currently seeking to immediately fill in positions within the program.
LAND USE PLANNING MANAGER -- Based in Berau, East Kalimantan
The Land use Planning Manager is responsible for the overall planning,
coordination and implementation of a comprehensive land use planning
program to protect natural areas and habitat for rare and endangered
plants, animals and natural communities using the full range of land use planning & conservation tools and cooperative projects with national, provincial, and district government, conservation organizations and other partners as appropriate. S/he works closely and coordinates with a wide variety of Nature Conservancy staff, private individuals, and corporations in support of conservation goals. S/he is an expert in spatial planning & conservation techniques and advises the land use planning staff and government partners on the application of these tools for conservation advancement. The Manager supervises land use planning staff working toward accomplishment of land use goals.
Requirements:
- Bachelors Degree in natural resources management, conservation, business, law or another related field of study and at least 5 years successful work experience in spatial planning, land conservation, real estate, law, business, or related field. Advanced degree may be required or preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to work efficiently and effectively with a wide range of people including local communities, industry executives, and government officials.
- Supervisory experience, including ability to motivate, lead, set
objectives and manage performance. - Knowledge of current trends and strategies in conservation and spatial planning.
- Successful experience in developing, directing and managing multiple projects and timelines.
- PC familiarity, including database knowledge, in order to maintain records related to land transactions.
FOREST MODELS MANAGER -- Based in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan
The Forest Models Manager is responsible for the development and implementation of a program to enhance the suite of tools and approaches available to land managers to effectively manage tropical forests in a various terrestrial land use categories within the confines of Berau District (e.g. production forest [HP], limited production forest [HPT], protection forest [HL], and non forest use areas [KBNK]).
Forest management tools and approaches will be developed, leveraged, and tailored to create "Models of Good Forest Management Practice" in natural forest concession, timber plantation, oil palm plantation, protection forest, mangrove shrimp farming, industrial coal mining, and small scale agricultural settings. The Land use Models Manager will achieve this by leveraging existing land use models, conservation tools and cooperative projects with national, provincial, and district governments, conservation organizations and other partners, as well as delivering innovative solutions to abate threats to Berau's tropical forests.
S/he works closely and coordinates with a wide variety of TNC staff, consultants, NGO partners, private companies, and government agencies in support of conservation goals. S/he is an expert in natural forest management with strong experience working with the private sector and local communities with hands-on conservation. S/he has proven experience in thinking outside the box to develop creative solutions to complex natural resource management challenges and is able to motive and lead a broadly disbursed team of people. S/he serves as the principle contact to government agencies, other conservation organizations, foundations and the academic community within his/her Conservation function.
Essential functions include the following:
- Establishes the Conservancy as a major conservation partner within the area of responsibility
- Defines conservation priorities in the area of responsibility
- Leads and manages team which supports and improves conservation efforts
- Builds strategic, scientific, and technical capacity in the field
- Develops key partnerships with public and private organizations in order to identify and resolve technical issues and to widely communicate solutions and best practices
- Develops innovative scientific methods, analyses, tools and frameworks to address the natural system needs
- Engages local community support for local conservation efforts
- Negotiates complex and innovative solutions with government agencies and land managers to conserve and protect natural forest
- Develops and implements conservation strategies
- Responsible for project management activities and strategic planning.
Requirements:
- MS degree and at least 7 years experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Demonstrated experience influencing, developing and implementing conservation policy and plans
- Knowledge of current trends and practices in relevant
discipline(s) and regions - Developing practical applications of scientific concepts and
technical innovations for conservation purposes - Knowledge of methods and standards of biodiversity information systems and initiatives
- Motivating team members, setting goals, and leading efforts
- Delivering practical, adaptable products and services to customers
- Knowledge of politics and society with respect to environmental affairs
- Managing time and diverse activities under deadlines while
delivering quality results - Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and Indonesian
- Demonstrated experience in fundraising
- Successful experience in developing, directing and managing
multiple projects. - Demonstrated supervisory experience, including the ability to
motivate, lead, set objectives and manage performance. - Successful experience in partnership development (partners,
community, government, etc); political savvy. - Proven interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills.
